Therefore, it is very important that the students should be taught vocabulary in every class before “learning the language” (Pimsarn, n.d, p.1). Vocabulary teaching should be undertaken in an extensive manner, so that students can learn and attain “good language skills” (Pimsarn, n.d, p.1). The students should be asked to read, write and construct sentences with new words they acquire, so they can easily use the words that they learn from the classes as well as in their daily life. Therefore, teachers must help them to read, write and understand the language better by rendering the learning process interesting for the students. For beginner level it is very important for the students to understand and learn whatever is taught in a correct manner and recall it whenever required. The play way method of teaching is more effective in making students understand the topic easily. Teaching by way of interesting activities, involving all the students, is a much better way to make students learn and understand. Learning by way of activities can be more effective and successful than the learning through oral teaching. Audience: Beginners in a public post secondary institute Goals: Improving students’ vocabulary and making the student understand the language Objectives: Develop student’s understanding of correct vocabulary To make students expressive To make student learn the topic with accuracy Material: 10 balloons, strings, a toothpick, a chart paper, few paper slips, a sketch pen, adhesive Procedure: 1 Greeting The class will begin with the teacher asking the students to settle down and take out their books 2 Revision The teacher will ask few questions from the students on the topic taught in the previous class. 3 Introduction The teacher will introduce the topic giving the definition, purpose and provide examples with sentences. Example : Opposite/antonym of word High is Low Sentence: The water level became very high due to rain The water level became very low due to less rain 4 Explanation The teacher will explain the topic of opposites/antonyms with the help of more examples and activity in the class. The teacher can also distribute assignments to the students for doing at home. 5 Activity The teacher will paste a chart paper on the board with few words written on it and will prepare few chits with the opposite of the words written. The class will be divided into 2 (5 students each in one group), each student will be given a balloon to blow and the balloons will be placed on the last bench with the slips. One student each will get up will select a chit and will read aloud the word written on the slip. Then the student has to match the opposite of the word written on slip with the right word from the chart. Example :Words written on chart 1. Girl 2. Night 3. Cold 4. Black 5. Beautiful 6. Sad 7. High 8. Up 9. Beginning 10. Poor Similarly the words written on paper slips will be 1. Down 2. Happy 3. Hot 4. Ugly 5. Boy 6. White 7. Low 8. Day 9. Rich 10. End Each student will stick a slip on the chart in front of chosen antonym. If an answer is wrong, the opposite team will burst a balloon of that team. The activity will go on till the last student in the class. The team with more number of balloons left at the end will win. By this type of play method students will become more interested in learning, winning and actively participating in the class. 5 Assessment The teacher will assess the understanding of every student with their answers given. At this level, the teacher should focus on giving more and more examples to the students for better understanding of the word and should also encourage students to participate by asking questions. In this manner, it will be easier for the teacher to know whether the students are able to understand the concept or not. She will first give a brief of opposites and antonyms, then she will introduce the concept of synonyms. She will say like antonyms are opposite words, Synonyms are words having the same meaning as the given word. She will make the students understand by giving a few examples, Synonym of Admire is Praise. Both are the words with the same meaning, Begin is synonymous to Start. 4 Explanation The teacher will give more examples by writing a few antonyms and synonyms on a chart paper and explain to the students the difference between the two. 5 Activity The teacher will divide the class into 2 and will write a few antonyms and synonyms on the board and will ask the students to identify which are Synonyms and which are antonyms. Eg: She writes Wise: Foolish the children will say it is an opposite, so it is an antonym. Allow: Permit it is a synonym since both the words have same meaning. Similarly, she will keep on giving words and students will identify the same. This will help them to understand the concept better. 6 Assessment Teacher will assess every student with the answers given and their participation in the activity. In addition, the teacher may give assignments to students where they will attempt to write essays, short stories or poems where they will use a given set of words. Students may also be encouraged to use both a synonym and an antonym of the given word in their writing exercise. This way, by using the words in different contexts, the students will be able to clearly understand the meaning of the words. Reference List Pimsarn, P. (n.d).
