Name Professor Course Date What Do I Want To Do With My Life In some cases a person can be faced with pressures from his controlling individuals such as parents and societies to pursue a career path that does not relate to his desires. For instance there can be an individual who is always curious, loving to think deeply through matters being told by parents to pick a career on Landscape Architecture, instead of philosophy. Although parents can be moved by the more money and low rates of unemployment that are in such careers, it is better that one picks a career that goes with his personal traits (Hussain, 2014), There are cases whereby plenty of people are doing jobs that are not connected to their undergraduate majors. Taking into account that taking up a career is one of the stages in a person’s life at which a decision must be made, self assessment is necessary. The self assessment will reveal one’s personal attributes, values, interests, skills, intelligence level among others; all of them which are critical to make informed career choices. Likewise, parents in a top law firm can be much pressurizing to a person who is interested in pursuing a career in Engineering. However, for one who likes figuring out how structures should look like, applying a lot of creativity to design complex pieces of equipment with a lot of math and mechanical skills, a career in engineering was much relevant. It was very much needed to do an honest self assessment to convince them to accept the career. As already stated, some people are normally motivated by hefty salaries that some careers promise, ignoring their personal traits to suite them. This issue can be much happening to those individuals who do not envision where they should be in their career, say after seven or ten years. Taking in mind that parents and other relatives own top law firms in the country which can assure bigger salaries, especially as one gains experience and prominence, It was somewhat tempting to take a law course. However, after self audit, engineering course seemed naturally compatible with personal traits; there was no need to take a career in which one was not interested and only to leave it after sometimes. In fact during these hard times, engineering courses are some of the courses with low unemployment and relatively high pays and therefore it is deemed that qualifying engineers have higher chances of being absorbed into work force. By not being moved by money, as one’s major object to accept studying engineering courses, it is evident that one can really enjoy spending his life as an engineer without being salaried. First, by learning engineering, one can easily realize how crappy some structures are being built. It will always be frustrating to him whether he earns money or not because he is part of the community that may be affected by the structures (Hussain, 2014) Moreover, an engineer will always be there as a protector of the environment, and he can easily tell the local community about the effects of some structures or engineering processes to the environment. Moreover, the whole of the engineering profession involves one being open-minded to continue solving problems that are open-ended. When somebody is best at what he does, it will be fun to deal with problems that have well-understood solutions. Everybody whether he earns money or not, wants something that can really challenge his creativity and abilities. Engineers are always ambitious people and on the run to bring a ground-breaking structure or invention on the market, which is a kind of intrinsic motivation, other money than money. Before opening up one’s engineering business to the public, it is important that an engineer becomes employed to gain some experiences and knowledge. In this regard, he will get a chance to intermingle, familiarize and work with people and learn more from them. Working in such environments will obviously enable a person to learn how to solve difficult and boring problems. However, it is important that he begins with a small organization where he can communicate directly with the manager. In this case there will be greater chances of one’s talents and abilities being valued by the employer. His recommendation on such grounds will become stepping stones in improving one’s profession in larger organizations that are even international, where he will earn higher salaries and get more opportunities for learning. Thereafter he can begin his private business as a subcontractor before developing to a full scale contractor, and therefore fully fledged engineering company. By being a subcontractor, one may not be obliged to work on full time basis by customers and he may therefore have many opportunities. By developing reputation as a successful consultant and contractor, he can open a full contracting firm. In this case he will be in a position to keep good records and receipts, and understand tax laws where he lives and works. With the booming oil markets in the United States, it is expected that careers that are related to it will experience higher demands for engineers. It has been estimated that employment in the petroleum industry will grow by 26% by the year 2022, which is quite more double than that of all jobs and approximately triple that of all engineers (Green Car Congress n. pag). Furthermore, the expected high demand for petroleum through 2030 to 2040s is expected to go side by side with that of jobs. However, it is expected that just after that period, most oil fields will begin to plateau and therefore the world oil production may start reducing. Petroleum companies, if it is presumed that they will have capital, they may start venturing in other sources of energy such as nuclear, and other renewable energies. Therefore decreasing job prospects may force some people to add skills and knowledge for them to be relevant. Currently, the job market for petroleum engineers looks most promising than for other fields. In some states like Colorado, some companies say that they have perfect employment rate for fresh graduates in Petroleum engineering from the state universities. Companies are becoming more and more eager on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden to find some petroleum engineers to offer them jobs. For those who chose engineering especially petroleum engineering, feel lucky that they are getting jobs even before they graduate. This industry is likely to be risky as oil wells begin to dry, but later in 1950s. This will be coupled with automation of production, which is increasing and may greatly reduce the kind and number of petroleum engineers being required. If the government does not restrict current immigrants seeking employment, as some firms take them because they come from low cost economies, locals seeking employment in the industry may be locked out. However, if the economy improves, the risk may be reduced, as when all sectors are functioning properly, people will tend to look for more “sexier jobs” like apps and social media. If the current economy continues to improve as individuals become technology minded, they may leave it. However, according to Professor Billy Eustis, as the cost of the energy goes up, there will be greater revenues and firms will seek more employees (Hussain para. 6) Automation and robotics are now being used in all oil production segments in varying degrees. Ordinarily, automation technology is reducing jobs. If employers discover means of economizing their resources, they will not hesitate to adopt them, unless the state intervenes (The Economist n.pag). In this regard, since the petroleum industry is divided into three segment (upstream segment, midstream segment and downstream), job loss due to automation vary according to how firms will employ automation in a given segment. Therefore if one works in a segment, say downstream segment where oil and gases are refined and distributed, he will be affected if the company introduces technology applications that can easily and cheaply refine and distribute the product. From the discussion, it is evident that although, currently, petroleum industry is booming, it may become depleted and petroleum companies decide to diversify or venture into other engineering activities, as a result. Related to this is that as more and more renewable and green energy are being discovered, there will be pressures by environmentalist governments to assert laws that demand their consumption, which will reduce markets and therefore revenues for the industry. Immediate effects of reduced markets and revenues will befall on engineers, inform of retrenchment or actual sacking. Moreover automation is becoming common, to reduce disasters, and produce petroleum cheaply. Therefore it is necessary that, as part of energy engineers, one continues enriching himself with concepts of recovering and distributing all common energy sources, because the world will always run on energy. Nevertheless, an associate degree in automation engineering is necessary to be sure in increasing chances of remaining in the field regardless of the changes in technology.
