Analysis Of a Poem “Hope” by Lisel Mueller
Lisel Mueller’s “Hope” is a strong poem, which describes the meaning of hope and where it is possible to find it in this world. The poem metaphorically explains that hope can be found everywhere.
For the very beginning, the verse is laced with inspiration. The author reminds us that hope in every human being’s life means some inspiring moral support, which is needed when something really bad happens in somebody’s life. Mueller claims that to find hope people should just look around and try to consider everything in this world as a resource of hope: “it lives in each earthworm segment” (“Hope” 11).
Hope seems to be random, and there is no certain rule for it. This idea the author shows through the form of the poem. It also may be understood through the fact that there is no rhyme in it and the meter is random as well.
The author is the main speaker of the poem. The locations which the author describes in the poem are definitely metaphorical and sound strange. But through a closer consideration it becomes obvious that all that author is trying to say is that the entire world, its nature, and every detail of it contains inspiration, which can turn into hope in human perception, the point is that people are not always able to discern it.
The lines “It is the singular gift/we cannot destroy in ourselves” (16-17) are the kind of poetical shift, as here Mueller says that hope is something that always exists in nature, thus it exists in human nature as well. That’s why we cannot destroy this feeling in ourselves, furthermore, we need to learn how to use this gift and find hope whenever we need it, as its effect on human life cannot be underestimated.
It seems to be a kind of insight for her, and she managed to get it after three stages were passed. The first stage was hidden; then she moved to the state of nature, where it was possible to find hope for ordinary people. The culmination of her inner evolution finds its place in the next stage when it became possible to find the sense and hope in own life through the understanding of the sense of life of ordinary human being. Thus as hope is a part of our essence, our life is closely connected with it, because this is what makes people humane, this is what prevents them from betraying each other and makes them trust each other.
In the final line, the author shows that this poem is just another evidence of hope. And since hope can be found everywhere, maybe a reader of the poem will hear that through this poem hope is trying to say that it is somewhere nearby.
