Journalism, mass media and communication al Affiliation) Explain how large scale communication is achieved Communicationis the exchange of information from one person or party to another. We understand that information is power, and people, who are in nature very social, always feel the need to be informed and lack of it or too much of it can have an adverse effect on their very existence. Being such a necessity to people, communication has presented a lucrative avenue for businesspersons and investors to make money. All the mediums for large-scale communication are readily received by people all over the world, and with increase in population and technological advancement, large scale communication will continue to thrive on the need for people to be informed of what is going on around them. As the mass communication industry gets more advanced, it brings along much more diversity while also playing a front role in promoting and alleviating intelligence. This is the bases of what is generally referred to as media, and it influences or controls most of the breaking news or information we get concerning the world around and beyond us. The media has experience exponential growth over the years, starting from fax machines, newspapers, radio, television, to the newest forms of mass communication, which borrow largely from the discovery of the internet. The new media has significantly helped to define what large-scale communication actually means. These include online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other collaborative tools which enable instant messaging, video conferencing, web meetings. Other than the information we take in personally, our view of the world is largely moulded by the manner in which information is presented by these media outlets. The fruitfulness of defining the Internet in terms of its separation from offline life in no way diminishes the Internet’s importance or seriousness. Quite the contrary, Trinidadians, like others, may invest heavily in relationships and practices that only exist online (Miller, Daniel, and Don 2000. pg 16). These platforms are now not only becoming an everyday part of people’s lives around the world but have also found their way into enterprise communications and management strategies, unlike their predecessors. How media are involved. Now that media is part of us, almost all aspect of life are represented in some way in the available forms of media. Owing to the abundance of media platforms, there has been great utilization of the available media by people to get informed about anything that interests them, from sports to business, education and music. The news and entertainment media however tend to focus on conflict or fearful stories, to get the attention of most people. This is because the news media depend on advertising for income, and parties looking to advertise look for platforms with the largest audience. Audiences are the commodity the commercial media sell to their advertisers (Tazanu,2012). Media representatives assert that they dwell on conflict simply because fear has captures the attention of most people and conflict is what they want to see. Conflict is more "captivating" to the audience than peace, just like an accident on the road grabs the attention of passersby. This situation has however been neutralised by the presence of the internet, whereby everyone has the ability to view stories that are most interesting to them on the various web and social media sites. “The use of random chat for engaging in relationships that we previously anonymous, and that could come from ant where and be ended at any time e, exemplifies the ideal of freedom (Miller, Daniel, and Don 2000. pg 26). The publication goes ahead to give the following example, contributed to a generally remarkable expansive attitude in Trinidad, whereby people see the opening up of markets, and the Internet as an opportunity to be grasped, as new freedoms that increase people’s potential (Miller, Daniel, and Don 2000. pg 26). How communication works. For communication is to be effective, transmitted ideas have to achieve their desired action or reaction within the context in which the message has been sent. As most if not all the operations involved in the daily activities require a team effort (which embraces varying participants), the main objective of communication therefore should be getting things done through multiple stakeholders. Communication is an inevitable process that takes diverse models altogether. Communication can be upward, downward, diagonal or horizontal. An example of upward communication includes communication initiated by a junior to a senior, in the same working department for instance. Downward communication is from a party in the senior position to another in a junior level. Horizontal communication is between parties at the same level (for example junior to junior) while the diagonal model of communication is between a junior and a senior in different departments altogether. How participation changes in cases of large-scale communication.  Large-scale communication especially the modern form (Internet) has assisted in building a global collaborative culture. For example, business executives now understand that to achieve success at major business transformation requires more than simply telling everyone about the new ways things are going to be done. They can accelerate acceptance change—processes, working relationships, services, policies and more—throughout the organization by enhancing real-time sharing of experiences. Social networking and collaboration applications have become an extremely effective means of unifying employees to undertake new projects and to share experiences—irrespective of their success and the temporary setbacks. This ideas is widespread across all aspects of life, whereby people with related roles or common interests can establish communities on the various large-scale communication media to learn from and support each other (Heath, Shirley1980).. Large-scale communication has facilitated the establishment of a more effective two-way communication. The things people learn from the media form the basis of important conversations at a interpersonal level for them, since they are more informed of the subject being discussed. Social media tools for example provide an effective communications avenue—for the diagonal form of communication across an organization. In addition, by constantly analyzing and participating in online discussions, an individual can spot favorable trends in his or her line of business and use it to enhance his or her skills. For example, managers can more readily see where any misunderstandings or “pain points” exist across the enterprise and take steps to address them (Tazanu, 2012 pg 43). Language and media in communication Media borrows a lot from language. One cannot prosper in the world of large scale communication without having a good command of a particular language. This is because poor mastery of a language could lead to grave mistakes such as giving false or misleading information. Language is comprises of so many aspects, and good mastery of a language demands excellence in all these aspects, for example pronunciation. An illustration of why a deep understanding of a certain language is essential is when considering interjections and onomatopoeic words. The media representative can misuse these English words, only to deter the overall meaning of the message. Since the message reaches a large number of people, (for example if televised) it will mislead thousands upon thousands of people, which is unhealthy for business. Language also enhances our creative and critical thinking capacity in relation to media languages as well as aiding societal transformation and enhancement of multilingual knowledge and skills (Kachru, 1990 pg 65). Signs & Ideologies in communication. Signs are specific, material things, and in large scale communication, any natural, technological, or item for consumption can become a sign, acquiring in the process a meaning that goes beyond its given self. A sign does not simply exist as a part of reality – it reflects and refracts another reality. It may or may not therefore distort that reality , or may perceive it from a special point of view, and so forth. Each sign is subject to the format of ideological evaluation. The domain of ideology coincides with the domain of signs. They equate with one another. Wherever a sign is present, ideology is present, too (Saussure, Baskin, Meisel, & Saussy, 2011 pg 47). Race & Ethnicity in communication Ethnicity and Race in Communication is concerned mostly with empirical and conceptual approaches that apply, enhance or develop media or communication theories and examine of ethnicity, race, diaspora and migration within local, national and international contexts. When one uses a social media as an inquiry instrument, the collection maps where the ethnic minorities articulated the identities and looks ways where the migrants and local people cope with each other in order to unmask the techniques where the migrations affects the individual and communities (Heath, Shirley,1980 pg 78).
